| Brown
University Emergency Medical Services (Brown EMS) is available
24 hours per day, 365 days per year. It provides Emergency
Medical coverage to the Brown University community, including
Advanced Life Support pre-hospital care and transport
service. Brown EMS is a division of Brown University Health
Services. In case of sudden illness or injury, call 863-4111,
the campus emergency number, and request EMS. |

Reasons to call EMS include
but are not limited to:
- Difficulty breathing
- Major bleeding
- Obvious or suspected major injury
- Any injury that impairs mobility
- Loss of consciousness or unresponsiveness
- Diminished consciousness or mental
confusion
- Severe pain - of sudden onset, of unknown
cause, or of long duration
- Severe alcohol/other drug intoxication
Brown University EMS is staffed by paid,
experienced advanced life support providers and student
volunteer EMT's. For more information you can contact
the administrative office of Brown EMS at 863-3671.

EMS News
Brown University Emergency Medical Services placed
their 2005 Ford/Horton Ambulance in service on June
30th, 2006 with a traditional wet down ceremony. Following
the ceremonial washing of the new truck by the two EMT's
of the Year for 2006, Ashley Jenkins and Nick Mark,
the truck is pushed back into its parking space by the
members of Brown EMS.
The new truck is equipped with the latest in pre-hospital
emergency medical gear, inclulding a LifePak 12 Monitor/Defibrillator
and a Rugged Power Lift stretcher.

Brown University Emergency
Medical Services offers a Basic EMT course, which meets
the requirements for licensure for the National Registry
of Emergency Medical Technicians and the State of Rhode
Island each summer. The course runs approximately 165
hours and meets on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings,
and Sunday afternoons for 10 weeks. Successful completion
of the course enables you to take the National Registry
EMT exam, which we also facilitate here at Brown. Basic
EMTs in Rhode Island are licensed pre-hospital care
providers and are certified to perform a number of pre-hospital
emergency medical interventions, such as albuterol treatments
for asthmatics, epinephrine for anaphylaxis, and many
others. The course description is listed below. If the

Summer
2008 Application -The
2008 Summer EMT Course is Full
This is an approximately 160 hour course designed to teach
the basics of life support in the pre-hospital setting.
The course covers basic anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology
as well as how to handle medical emergencies and traumatic
events. Lectures will be combined with frequent lab work
in order to integrate knowledge and skills. There will
be frequent quizzes, two midterm exams, and a final exam.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be
eligible to take the National Registry EMT licensure exam.

Curriculum
The course covers material in the
following:
- Prehospital Emergency Care (8th edition)
text and workbook
- State of RI Prehospital Care Protocols
and Standing Orders
- Practical Skills Objectives Sheets,
as developed by RI EMS
- Practical Skills Laboratory Performance
Sheet, as developed by RI EMS
- EMT Basic Patient Observation Forms
- Functional Job Description for an EMT
- ADA Policy and Certification
of Eligibility Form
Laboratory days will concern
the following practical skill stations:
- Basic airway management
- Patient assessment (medical and trauma)
- Traction splinting
- Kendrick Extrication Device (KED)
- Long spineboard
- Esophageal Obturator Airway (EOA)
- Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (PASG-MAST)
- CPR/AED
Policies
- Mandatory attendance at all class sessions
is required. Valid medical excuses or other emergency
reasons will be accepted for no more than 3 absences.
Late arrivals or early departures are not be permitted.
Violation of this policy may result in dismissal from
the course.
- Active participation at practical skills
sessions is required.
- The written quizzes and exams must
be passed with a mean average of 70% or above, and
proficiency must be demonstrated at each practical
skill station.
Cost
- The cost for this course is $900.00
- A deposit of $100.00 is due with the application.
- The course fee covers the cost of the textbook and
supplemental literature and necessary supplies.
